Translation Notes
(1.) BREAK THE NORM is Ryuseitai performing under Shinobu’s leadership. The themes of the song are discussed in the story as well, so I recommend reading it!
(2.) Anzu (the producer) composed this song, Shinobu wrote the lyrics, and Chiaki made the choreography! This is mentioned in the story.
(3.1) The Japanese lines in the lyrics don’t contain any first-person or second-person pronouns (no “I”, “we”, or “you”). The only parts that specifically use a pronoun are the italicized English parts, such as “Yes, it’s naked my heart”, “I wanna break all wall”, etc.
(3.2) Because of this, the first-person/second-person pronouns in the translation are interchangeable depending on the person’s interpretation, for ex. “To prove this is something only you can achieve - Set out for the boundless land horizon”; this can be interpreted with “I” instead similar to how the English lines are written.
(3.3) I’ve personally chosen to make the lyrics address the listener, and then sing together as one. This way, it has a mixture of the individuality of using “I” in the English lines, the “we” of being united, and the “you” who gets stirred by Ryuseitai’s song.
(4.1) As a fun note, I noticed that this song shares a few similarities to Shinobu’s 3 solos:
- The lightning speed themes (and facing yourself to grow stronger) from With Lightning Speed, the Way of the Ninja
- The rap lyrics and themes of being “different” from Seisei Doudou Cheer Song!
- And the evolution themes (as well as absence of ninja themes) from Step-Up Evolutionary Theory
(4.2) This is my own interpretation, but I personally think the similarities might be because Shinobu was behind the lyrics for BREAK THE NORM.
- ↑ “Labyrinth” is meikyuu (迷宮), made up of the kanjis for “lost” and “shrine/palace”.
- ↑ “Common sense” is joushiki (常識), also referring to social norms and practices.
- ↑ In Japanese, this is kara (殻), which can refer to the outer shell an animal sheds.
- ↑ The sea horizon, where the sea and sky meet, is a common theme for Kanata, as seen in his first solo song, marine blue rendezvous, and his leader event, Reverb ★ The Stella Maris Across the Horizon.
- ↑ This is senkou, referring to an extremely strong light. It’s also usually used for lightning, hence why it’s in this song. Shinobu has sung lyrics before with senkou, in SUPER NOVA REVOLU5TAR ([If an everlasting] flash is your desire).
