まりんぶるう・らんでぶう

marine blue rendezvous

puka, puka…♪ won’t you join me?1

swaying with the waves is our small boat, our destination is wherever the wind takes us
gathering here are the fish that know the far, far sea

let us hear just how sparkling the mysterious blues are2
with their delightful friends, giggles bubble up as they talk3

blue, blue, sea rendezvous
reflecting on the water’s surface, the sky and sun melt away
swaying, swaying, with you until the very end
to the horizon beyond, let’s head toward that arch of light4

breathe deeply to the sound of the waves, and even your heart will feel cleansed
everyone was born here; this deep, deep sea is kind, isn’t it?5

tell me, etched within your memories is the sight of those blues
even if you forget every time you wake up, it still exists deep within you

vast, vast sea rendezvous
let’s freely row through the water, and go on a far journey
lalala, lalala, the song drifts on until the end
through the round star it swims, as it lights up our path6

washed ashore past the blue, let’s search for treasure
and then, let’s swim through our dreams again

blue, blue sea rendezvous
reflecting on the water’s surface, the sky and sun melt away
swaying, swaying, with you until the very end
to the horizon beyond, let’s head toward that arch of light4

puka, puka…♪ won’t you join me?1

Translation Notes

  1. Puka puka means “floating” (Sometimes translated as “bubble, bubble”). Usually when Kanata says this, it’s to do with his favorite hobby, water-bathing, where he “floats” in a body of water.
  2. As a fun note, Kanata tends to sing a line like this in songs (“let us hear”), like in his center/leader song, Bokura no Stella (Let us hear the voice of that wishing star) and OVERFLOW LIGHT UP!!!!!, (Let us hear the signal that something wonderful happened to you!). In the latter song, he came up with those lyrics himself!
  3. Kanata says kusu kusu for “giggle”. He sometimes laughs with this sound (though usually translated as “ehe, hehe” in my translations),and it indicates a small chuckle/giggle.
  4. “horizon beyond” is suiheisen no kanata in Japanese. kanata, meaning “beyond the other side/distance”, is homophonous with Kanata’s name.
  5. As a fun note, Kanata’s last name, shinkai, means “deep sea”. Another interesting note is that Earth is referred to as a “water planet”. Kanata has said a line using this word before, in Aquarium, Epilogue: “this is the gentle [planet earth] (water planet)! we are all [family], born on this planet!”.
  6. “round star” likely refers to the Earth; in Japanese, hoshi refers to any stellar objects, including planets.
