Translation Notes
Yumenosaki Ryuseitai Song is the tradition song for Yumenosaki’s Ryuseitai, the first idol unit established in the academy.
(1.) The song contains references to how a sentai squad typically operates in Super Sentai shows, the main one being “Grip the steering joystick and plunge forward”, i.e. piloting the mecha robot, a vehicle that combines the heroes’ strengths into one giant robot. Ryuseitai also has their own mecha robot, called Meteorking, and can be seen in this illustration, as well as the shoot ‘em up game they starred in, Hero Sentai Meteoranger.
(2.) In-universe, this song has been passed down from previous generations of Ryuseitai. However, as the unit turned “rotten inside out” prior to the events of the game, the units’ traditions were lost and almost forgotten. The poor state of the unit is explicitly shown in Meteor Impact, mentioned in Crossroad and Gang, as well as spoken about in Legendary Hero! (with Jin explaining the messy state of affairs during his time as an idol working with Ryuseitai). It took until Chiaki entered the academy and unit for Ryuseitai’s original “Hero Sentai” concept to be slowly brought back. Despite resistance from other (now former) members, Chiaki continued his efforts, deeply fuelled by his love for tokusatsu heroes. It took until Chiaki’s third year in Yumenosaki for his efforts to come to fruition, with the current five Ryuseitai members.
(3.) In the Crossroad anime, second year Chiaki is shown to be singing the song all alone. See here, at timestamp 7:30.
(4.) This song was released alongside The Unrivaled ☆ Meteorangers!, the song that instead shows the current five members’ mismatched and unique energy.
Comment from the music producer, Satoru Kuwabara, in Starry Stage 1st’s Pamphlet (2018):
Ryuseitai is a unit that’s been around for an exceptionally long time within Yumenosaki Academy’s history, and its members have changed over time. This song was created with the concept that the current members are inheriting from the members before them. I feel as though if everyone in the live venue also sang along to the “Wow Oh…” intro, it’d be a wonderful sight to behold… But I wonder if they’ll even perform it in this live show? (laughs) I very much look forward to it!
- ↑ Ryuseitai sings sora (meaning sky), but with the kanjis 宇宙 (meaning universe) used in the transcript. It can also indicate the vast sky filled with stars.
- ↑ Ryuseitai sings kanata e, meaning “beyond the other side/distance”. This word is homophonous with Kanata’s name.
- ↑ This is not the actual Ryusei Blue catchphrase; the actual one is “The blue flame is the mark of mystery! The water planet, shining within the universe!” (first revealed by Chiaki in Legendary Hero!). Kanata has never used the actual catchphrase, and has come up with several variations of it across the stories, even in ES!! Era. The “sparkle” (kira) is also his own added touch.
- ↑ This is not the actual Ryusei Green catchphrase; the actual one is “The green flame is the mark of compassion! The great nature, growing infinitely!” (first revealed by Chiaki in Supernova). When Midori was a first year, he’d always opt to say his own variation of the catchphrase, Yumenosaki Ryuseitaika containing one of the variations. But in Climax - Epilogue 5, Midori finally says the actual catchphrase, and he’s only used the actual one since.
- ↑ This is referring to the giant mecha robot a Super Sentai squad typically pilots. Ryuseitai has one too, called the Meteorking, and can be seen in this illustration.
