Contradictory Duo 1
Season: ES 2nd Year, Spring (May)

2nd year since ES’s establishment, in spring. In a town’s back alley…
Huff… Huff… That seems to have shaken them off…
Good grief, just how many guys did they dispatch for one mouse chase? Must be a workload on them.
(On the contrary, that goes to show just how much they can’t let slide the information that “I”* have obtained.)
(That knowledge alone gives me hope. This means that I still have a chance to outwit those guys.)
(That’s just another reason why I have to do whatever it takes to get to that place.)
(But how will I even get there… Considering those pursuers, I’m better off avoiding public transportation like trains and buses.)
(In that case, catching a taxi might be best. I’ll just slip into the main street, and…)
……!
(Footsteps!? Have they caught up to me already!?)
(They’re definitely getting closer! Is there anywhere I could just—… No, it seems there aren’t any places to hide.)
(Then I’ll simply have to strike first.)
…Hah!
Woah! That’s dangerous, you know. You shouldn’t swing your fist out of nowhere.
—!? Why are you here…?
Aren’t you supposed to be on house arrest?
So it seems. I can’t say I agree with it one bit, though.
Either way, we can save the talking for later. Let’s get out of here first. Follow me.
…That won’t be necessary. This has nothing to do with you.
Then what do you plan to do? Right now, the guys from that organization are combing the backstreets in a frenzy, looking for you.
It’s only a matter of time before they find you.
…………
Relax. I’m on your side.
I parked my motorbike near the street. You’d also be in a better spot if you had the means of getting out of here, right?
…Alright.

(—Doesn’t seem like there’s anyone tailing us.)
—! Is this… a helmet?
Go ahead and wear it. It should hide your face a little.
Oh yeah, could you tell me where we should be heading? You picked up on a huge lead, didn’t you?
Why do you know that…?
—Don’t tell me you tailed after me.
No need to be on guard like that. This isn’t the time to doubt your own allies.
Despite my current position, I’ve been investigating on my own. That’s when I heard that a huge lead was put in your hands, that’s all.
That’s quite the reckless behavior for someone on house arrest.
This hardly counts as reckless.
This isn’t a case you can meddle in without going all out. You understand that too, don’t you?
…It’s the storehouse where the first incident occurred.
If my deduction is correct, there should be evidence that the victim had left behind.
Alright, got it. Then hop on in from the back.
…………
What’s wrong? They’ll get a tail on you again if you just stand there.
I’m well aware. It’s just that, it’s my first time riding double on a motorbike…
Don’t tell me you’re feeling nervous, are you?
Ha-ha-ha! I thought you were composed and didn’t get fazed by the little things, but there’s a surprisingly cute side to you too, huh…☆
Please don’t form such a ridiculous impression of me.
……I only ask that you practice safe driving.
Of course. I don’t want to get pulled over, either!
A bit of time passes…
So? Why were you around that back alley?
I told you, didn’t I? I was investigating the case. I may be on house arrest, but I’m not the kind of guy to sit tight in one place.
That being said, it was a complete coincidence that I spotted you slipping into the back alley all roughed up — honest.
—A complete coincidence, is it? If you were going to lie, at least make it a believable one.
You sure are harsh… Well, to be more precise, I spotted the guys tailing after you, and guessed where they were heading.
That’s how I noticed you were here too and decided to protect you. Are you satisfied now?
Quite so. Much more than when you said it was all a coincidence.
Well, even if that were the case, it still astounds me that you would attempt to help someone being tailed after an organization. That’s some extremely foolhardy behavior.
That’s just how I am. If I see someone in trouble, I can’t get myself to ignore it.
You’re free to laugh at me if it’s nothing but a thoughtless sense of justice in your eyes. But even if it is, I don’t want an incident like this to ever happen again.
I just don’t want there to be any more victims.
I agree with you on that, but…
—Is that truly the only reason?
Mm?
Perhaps it’s only my imagination, but… I don’t feel as though that’s the actual reason you’re pursuing this case.
…………
(Under the surface of this case lies people like us*, who are seen as taboo by the world.)
(Someone like him, who lives in the bright side of the world, is not someone I’d want invol—)
—! Why are you suddenly speeding up!? I thought I told you to drive safely!
Change of plans, I don’t think we can afford to do that!
We’ve got a tail. I see about five vehicles!
Those black cars… When did they get here…!?
But this is a main street. They wouldn’t dare to do something conspicuous here!
I’m not so sure about that. Those guys will do whatever it takes to get what they want.
(They blocked the front road…!? We’re going to crash into them—!)
Hold onto me tight!
UOOOOOHHH—!!
Sound of a speeding motorbike
(He slipped through the tiny gap between the cars!?)
I’m changing routes! I’m going to try and shake them off our tail first!
It’s going to be a rough ride! Make sure you don’t get thrown off!
…Got it!
Contradictory Duo 2

At the same time — At a certain shopping center…
(…I didn’t think work would finish this early.)
(I’ve got such a weird gap of free time, what should I do with it?)
(I could just go back to Seisoukan from here, but… No, now that I think about it, today’s the day that—)
(As I thought, there’s that new publication out.)
(I haven’t been to the bookstore in quite some time, so this is perfect. I’ll just go and take a peek inside on my way home.)
The bookstore in the shopping mall is the closest one from here, it seems. …Hm?

Mhm, looks like we’re not missing anything. I think this should be all of it, then.
There’s no need to thank me. More importantly — are you hurt anywhere?
I see. That’s good, what a relief. Well then, please be careful out there.
Whoa… A deed of kindness is pretty admirable.
Hasumi-senpai! Fancy meeting you in a place like this!
Yeah. I was just coming back from work. Was that senior citizen just now an acquaintance of yours, Amagi?
No. It was an old woman I didn’t know.
She bumped into a couple of people coming out of the back alley over there, and ended up dropping all the bags she was carrying.
You picked them all up by yourself? The people who bumped into her didn’t stop and help?
Yeah, about that… There was something that felt a little unsettling, and it seemed like they were in a hurry to get somewhere.
How incorrigible. If you’re rude to someone like that, you should still stop and help pick everything up as an apology, even if you’re in a hurry.
At any rate. It’s thanks to you lending a hand that that person was saved. You did a good thing.
Heheh. All I did was what anyone would do.
You said you were finished with work, Hasumi-senpai — were you heading back to Seisoukan?
Not quite. Since work ended so early, I was thinking of stopping by a bookstore on my way home.
I see. A book, huh…? That might not be a bad idea.
…? What’s this about a book?
Right. It’s going to be Mayoi-senpai’s birthday very soon, so I went out into town today to buy him a present.
I was making the rounds around the shopping district trying to find something he’d like, but…
The more I thought about it, the less I could make sense of what would make him happy, so it’s been weighing on my mind.
So that’s what you were muttering about a book for. But if it’s from you, I feel like he’d be happy with whatever you give him.
Well, what did you get him for his birthday last year?
About that… I didn’t know what I should get him, so I ended up getting him just about everything I could think of.1
Mayoi-senpai was really happy, but Aira scolded me for being way too excessive.
I also thought to myself that it wouldn’t be good to not decide on one single thing, so this year, I’m hoping to get him one thing he’d enjoy the most.
Well, I don’t really think there’s any real reason to restrict yourself to just one thing, but… I get the gist nonetheless.
Oh, I know. Hasumi-senpai, if it’s okay with you, could you help me find a present for him?
I feel like I’ll just end up fretting again if I’m on my own. It’d be reassuring to have someone who could give me their objective opinion. ♪
Hm. Well, I wouldn’t say I’m especially skilled at picking out gifts for people, but…
I was going to go to the bookstore anyway. If it’s about books, I’m sure I could show you the lay of the land at least a little.
Thank you, Hasumi-senpai! I’m indebted, really!
When it comes to the closest bookstore from here, I assume you were going to the one in the shopping mall, is that right?
Yeah. There are plenty of other stores there too, so I imagine it’s the ideal place to search for a present, right?
Mhm! I’ll definitely pick out a present that’s going to make Mayoi-senpai happy!
…………
What’s the matter, Hasumi-senpai?
It’s nothing. I saw a strange crowd forming over there, so it caught my attention, is all.
…Ah, you’re right…? Do you think someone’s performing a live show?
The atmosphere feels too strict for it to be a live show. It seems there are some police cars parked as well.
By the looks of things, it seems like there was some kind of traffic accident. The headlights are crushed.
That’s a pretty grim picture. I just hope the driver isn’t hurt…
At any rate, we shouldn’t stop and stare. Let’s hurry and go to the mall.
Contradictory Duo 3

Several minutes earlier. At the storehouse where the crime scene occurred…
It looks like there are no guards here, it’s just barricaded with tape.
Still, we can’t stay here for too long. Let’s find that lead quick, and—
…………
What’s wrong? You can’t just stand there and space out, we need to hurry and investigate the place!
Didn’t you say there’s still some evidence lying about here?
I’m aware.
…No, I get it. I wasn’t considerate enough.
It may have been several days since then, but the fact remains that this is where that gruesome incident occurred.
I’ve grown used to these sorts of sceneries, but it must be a shock to a regular person like you.
…Still, we can’t just take our time around here. We don’t know when the next time those pursuers will pick up a trail on you, like they did a moment ago.
Alright, this leaves us no choice. You rest here, I’ll go ahead and check—
—While I appreciate the concern.
That is not the reason I’m unable to move.
You would be the source of that.
Me? Sorry, I can’t think of anything…
I thought I was going to die!
I understand it was so that we could escape, but that was unbelievably reckless driving…!
It’s actually a miracle that we’re here in one piece.
Ohh! You meant my driving. I was really confused what you were talking about for a second there!
But I told you beforehand, didn’t I? It was going to be a rough ride.
They intended to shoot us dead, after all. If I hadn’t done all that, we wouldn’t have been able to get here.
I’m aware. As soon as we were tailed by cars, it would’ve been impossible for me to get here on my own.
However, I would like you to understand that I experienced my life on the line even more than when I was being tailed on my own…!
Two of the cars crashed, and I could hear an explosion behind us. When shrapnel from the cars blasted straight towards us, my life flashed before my eyes.
Ha-ha-ha! ☆ Now you’re just exaggerating things!
I don’t think I am. Never could I have ever imagined experiencing one of those car chase scenes from foreign movies.
Fufu. But I’m relieved to see you’re feeling well enough to throw some complaints…♪
…Up until now, I’ve been swallowed up in a fair share of absurd events like this, after all.
Coming near a crime scene wouldn’t disturb me at this point.
That’s good to know, then!
Judging by how abnormally desperate they are to stop us — Or rather, stop you…
I assume this means that the information you obtained would really put them in a bad spot.
That, or it could even be the silver bullet that can pierce its way through to the mastermind at the very heart of the organization.
If that’s truly the case, then I can’t afford to lose you.
Actually, even if that weren’t the case, you’re still a friend of mine that I ought to protect.
Don’t worry. Even if it costs me my life, I’ll make sure to protect yours.
…………
To be honest, I still don’t fully understand your nature as a person.
You can’t neglect someone in trouble, you have an abnormal sense of justice… Perhaps I should call you someone who aspires to be a hero.
That much about your disposition is quite clear to me, but — Somehow, I feel that isn’t all there is to why you’re here right now.
Why are you so persistent with this case?
Is it that strange to sprint as hard as I can from place to place to eradicate all evil?
I can’t ignore someone who dares to harm others, or destroys the peaceful lives of people.
—But, well. I can tell by the look on your face that that isn’t the sort of answer you were looking for.
Not when the state of affairs is like this.
I can’t entrust my life to someone without knowing their true intentions at least.
That’s undeniably true. …The reason I’m pursuing this case, huh?
—It’s for revenge.
……!
Haha, would you judge me for that?
…Let me tell you an old tale. I say that, but it’s actually a story from several months back.
The truth is, a crime similar to this incident has happened before in the past. Back then, my juniors got caught up in the incident, and… Do I need to go on?
They were all dependable guys, and each of their individualities shined through. Well, it took a while for us to open up to each other, though.
I would look after them with my colleague, who I graduated from the academy with. We dashed from place to place, bringing tons of actual justice to fruition.
…With them, every day was a treat.
I see. It all makes sense now.
That’s why you were put on house arrest, weren’t you?
You were seen as someone who could potentially behave recklessly if it meant capturing those who harmed your precious juniors.
You’re a sharp one, huh? That’s exactly right.
Still, the other guys were just thinking about me, telling me not to over-do it.
My colleague was also worried about me, and that’s likely why he took me off the case.
…If that’s them being thoughtful, then I would have been much happier if they just lent me a hand.
Well, in the end, I didn’t keep to the house arrest demands, and instead went off to do an investigation.
Is the culprit behind this case and that past one the same person?
Yeah, there’s no doubt about it. The crime was committed in practically the same way. The markings that were unnaturally left behind at the crime scene are the same as the one in the past, too.
Well, it’s also possible that it was someone committing a copycat crime…
But either way, we can’t afford to let a dangerous individual like that run loose.

I will catch the culprit, no matter what. And then…
—I’ll have them pay for their crime.
…………
(Such cold eyes… It’s almost unbelievable that he’s the same man who was speaking to me so cheerfully only a moment ago. Based on how he said it’s for “revenge”…)
(I assume that “paying for their crime” won’t stop at settling things in court.)
(Intense feelings of hatred can truly change a person this much.)
(…Though, I’m practically the same, aren’t I*.)
My little brother was also exposed to grave danger by this case. I* could never forget the rage I felt the moment I found out.
Please lend me your assistance. We’ll catch the culprit behind these cases together.
Yeah, of course. I’m counting on you, ace detective!
We got absorbed into our conversation for a while there. Let’s hurry and find what the culprit left behind.
Sound of phone ringing
Based on the message the second incident’s victim left behind, we should find a—…!
—…! That surprised me! You’ll make my heart jump…
(Is that my phone ringing? Who on earth would call me at this exact moment—)
Hello—
“—Is your li’l brother doing better now, hm?”
Little brother? Who the hell—…!
Watch out—!
Sound of a gun shot
……!
“Ah~h, I missed. You sure got good reflexes, ‘Police Officer’?”
(A gun shot… He’s bleeding from the shoulder… Did he just take the shot for me!?)
Calm down, it’s just a graze…
I seriously can’t stand how dusty it is here~ I was hoping I’d never have to come here again…
But I heard some puppies were snooping around, so I came to settle things…♪
Contradictory Duo 4

(It might be because I haven’t been to the bookstore in quite a while, but I’m going to end up splurging a little more money than I planned.)
(E-books are rising in prominence in the publishing business, after all. And I have been buying them on my smartphone just the same, but…)

(It truly is wonderful coming to a bookstore in person to see everything laid out in front of you. You might come across some unexpected finds too.)
(And luck was on my side, they had one last copy of the book I wanted.)
(I think I’ll be enjoying a paperback book tonight for the first time in a long time. ♪)
(That reminds me, Amagi is…)
Hmm…
I’ve kept you waiting, Amagi. Were there any books that seemed like they’d be of interest to Ayase?
I don’t know. Everything I saw looked really interesting and intriguing, but that’s just based on my intuition.
When it comes to a book that would make Mayoi-senpai happy, I didn’t find anything that would fit.
There’s no need to doubt your instincts more than necessary. I know this might sound pointless, but they say the most important thing when giving a present is the feelings you put behind it.
Wanting to share something you love with someone — That’s not a bad reason to pick out a gift for someone.
At any rate, you don’t need to rush it. You don’t necessarily need to get hung up on getting him a book either.
Well, we did go to the trouble of going to the mall. I’d say it’d be good to make the rounds and decide what you want.
…You’re right.
I saw you were enjoying yourself while looking for a book to buy, and it made me want to gift him a book all the more…
But, like you said, there’s all kinds of other shops in this mall too, so… I might not need to make up my mind here, huh.
Hold on. …I seemed that pleased to you?
That’s how it seemed to me, but… was I wrong?
…………
Oh yeah. Could you show me the sort of books you bought, as reference?
Hm. I suppose I don’t mind.
This one’s a new release from an author I’ve followed since I was in school, and these are some management theory books that have been acclaimed lately.
I got a few books that some of the staff in my agency recommended to me… and then under that is manga — this month’s release, in fact.
You really do read all sorts of books, hm. None of these are genres I read.
H~m. Are there any books among all these that you think Mayoi-senpai might be interested in?
I can’t say I see Ayase absorbing himself in books about business management. The books the staff recommended to me are similar in that regard…

—Isn’t manga the easiest to get into out of all these? It seems a lot more approachable than books packed full of text.
…!? You came out of nowhere… Don’t just start talking to people unprompted. You’ll scare someone.
Huuh~? You’re spooked way too easily, Hasumi-senpai. See? Hiiro-kun’s not surprised at all.
That’s because I noticed you approaching us.
Hey, at least I didn’t call out to you loudly like Aniki would’ve and freak everyone out, right?
Obviously. There are other shoppers around us, so don’t be too noisy.
Ye~ah, yeah. Got it~
Good afternoon. Did you come to shop for books too, Yuuta-kun?
Mm~, not really. I had time to kill, so I just ended up finding myself here someway or another.
And then I saw you two and waited for a good time to pipe in, I guess?
So, you guys came to buy a gift for Ayase-senpai, huh?
Mhm. It’s going to be Mayoi-senpai’s birthday very soon, so I’m looking for something that would make him happy.
Hasumi-senpai is helping me with that.
Huh, really. What a rare duo… or well, maybe not? I think you two are in the same circle, actually.2
So, what kinda manga didja buy there, Hasumi-senpai?
I was curious about that too. If it’s a manga you’d be willing to buy, it must be very interesting.
You’re raising your expectations strangely high. Though of course, I’m not going to say it isn’t interesting.
The title is “The Sub-Zero Mystery”. It’s a murder-mystery story where a cool-headed private detective and a hot-blooded police officer are partnered together to solve a difficult case.
“The Sub-Zero Mystery”…?
Things like how the crimes play out and the alibis are pretty well-thought out, so you feel rewarded for actually thinking through the case, and watching the web of relationships surrounding the protagonists play out is interesting too.
More than anything, though, the charm of this manga is the personalities of the two main protagonists.
When you first start reading, the characters seem to have standard, cookie-cutter personalities. However, as they pursue the case, the contradictory side of them comes out more and more.
You might think that the police officer is a fervent, upstanding man at first glance, but he’s actually a realist with the madness to do whatever it takes to meet his goals.
The private detective’s disposition is calm and level-headed, but when his family’s in danger, his emotions spill over and he daringly jumps into action.
That character gap between them is what captivates readers, and so it ended up snowballing into popularity and being pushed in various places.
But my favorite character is the janitor we meet in chapter one. Chapter three — the one where he teams up with the private detective — is an absolutely impeccable piece of art…♪
As the most popular chapter, it gets talked about extensively amongst readers of the series.
You know, with the way you talk about it so passionately, Hasumi-senpai, it makes me want to know even more about that manga.
If you’re interested, I can lend you the first volume. I’ve got all of the ones that are currently released back at the dorms.
Really? If you’re alright with it, I’d like to borrow it, Hasumi-senpai.
If it’s that interesting, then this manga might make for a good present for Mayoi-senpai.
Personally, I’d also be grateful to have more people I can talk to about this story.
When we get back, I’ll get it prepared to lend it to you—…
Ah, I thought so!
What is it, Yuuta-kun?
Hasumi-senpai, isn’t there gonna be a live adaptation of this work?
…? Now that you mention it, I do remember there being an announcement of that sort.
I heard about it a good while ago, but I never followed up on any news about it…
You’ll see it everywhere if you look it up. There’s a site up for the live action, and the cast has been announced, too.
Have they released that much about it already?
Huh? No way, are the two leads…
Yup, sure is! The two leads cast for the live action are HiMERU-san and Morisawa-senpai!
Contradictory Duo 5

Phew…
Great work, Himerun~ Your acting was spot on.3
—Of course. HiMERU will always meet all expectations, especially if he’s been selected to play the lead.
…Also, HiMERU believes he has told you not to call him by a strange nickname, no?4
Ehh~? What’s wrong with “Himerun”? It isn’t even that wack for a nickname.
Or would you rather I call you “Merumeru” to match with Rinrin?5
Sigh… Never mind, let’s just drop this already.
That being said, Sakuma-san… HiMERU is just as surprised as you. You arrived only a moment ago, yet you took on your role perfectly.
Right~? Well, really, I was so sure I’d have to go through several retakes, though.
But when I gave it a shot the first time around, the director was way more impressed than I expected. What a relief.
Thanks to that, the scenes they had scheduled for filming today are almost done.
We’re making real good progress, huh? I wouldn’t say the film sets I know of are necessarily a mess, but you always get the sense people are floundering around everywhere.
Maybe it’s because we’re still at the prologue, but I dunno, it feels like I’m performing my parts at a comfortable pace…♪
—HiMERU shares the same thoughts.
It goes without saying that there are outstanding staff on set, but HiMERU believes that isn’t the only reason it’s moving this smoothly.
HiMERU feels something that’s particularly comfortable about this film set.
Ah~ That might be ‘cause of Moririn?
…What do you mean?
I heard that almost all of the production staff here were from the previous live action Moririn was in.6
When the adaptation was still being decided on, the author requested for certain staff members to be on the team…
And after the production team discussed who to make the lead stars, they were really hoping to make Moririn one of them, apparently.
HiMERU wasn’t aware of this. Was this written in an interview somewhere?
Nah, I heard about it from a staff member.
Considering that’s how we all got here, it might be why it feels as though everyone just knows what to do on this set.
Hmm… That does explain a lot of things.
And indeed, Morisawa-senpai has been making conversation with the staff members and director during the breaks, as well.
He might be unaware of this himself, but those actions are precisely what make the atmosphere of this place better.
Yeah, even now, he’s talking to the director with the script in his hands~… Ah—
……!
—He made eye contact with us.
I’m guessing he’ll come over to where we are, huh…
…Yes, that seems to be the case.
Great work, you two!
Sakuma, your acting was superb! The director also praised you — they said you got the role down to a T!
And of course, you too, HiMERU! They had high hopes the moment they asked you to be the lead star, but they didn’t imagine you’d fit the role like a glove this much!
Yeah, yeah. Thanks.
HiMERU is glad to know he was able to meet their expectations.
Huh, what’s up? Neither of you are very pumped…?
Hmm… It’s starting to get late out, so I suppose you’re starting to feel hungry.
There’s some snacks here, so I’ll bring them over if you like…♪
No, HiMERU isn’t hungry or anything.
You stay energetic, Moririn, and we balance that out by being quiet. So don’t sweat it so much.
Mm, is that so? Well, let me know right away if anything pops up.
Still, I never thought I’d be in the same live action show as you two.
Sakuma’s been expanding his work as an actor through works like “LaMort” and “Evil TELEPHONE”…7
And HiMERU played a part in “Midnight BUTLERS” and “Timbres of Heaven”, so getting an opportunity to perform with the two of you is everything I could ever ask for.8
That is an honor. HiMERU never expected to have a chance to perform with you, Morisawa-senpai. You’ve carried out a broad range of acting jobs.
HiMERU intends to learn a lot from you through this job.
Ha ha ha! That makes me really happy to hear~♪
That being said, I’m a little surprised Moririn got an offer to take part in this live action~
The police officer is a hot-blooded guy, and so I do think he suits you on a surface-level…9
But as I kept reading the manga, his darker side started spilling out. It’s not really a direction I can imagine you having, given your strong hero image.
—HiMERU thought the same at first, but he has changed his mind after filming today’s scenes.
A performance that held a dark, murky, bottomless depth to it…
When HiMERU saw that, he could understand why the staff chose Morisawa-senpai as the lead star.
Fufufu. Thank you! Actually, I was a bit nervous about it too at first, but I’m glad to know I managed to convey the weight of this character’s past through the lines and the performance…☆
The stunt scene was perfect, too. I gotta say, you really are perfectly casted for this.
HiMERU was amazed, as well. To think, the first take would get a stamp of approval…
I used to do a lot of motorbike stunts, after all.10 Although, I had HiMERU in the back, so I was a little worried at first.
—HiMERU was also anxious, honestly. HiMERU wasn’t sure if it’s the right call to have a stuntman perform such a dangerous action scene.
It’s fine to feel anxious though, yeah? Even the detective was like, “I thought I was going to die”.
Projecting yourself onto the role is an effective method for believable acting, after all. I’m looking forward to HiMERU’s acting for the rest of the scenes, too.
Like the ones where the composed detective succumbs to his emotions the moment he finds out his family is in danger…
Those sorts of scenes appear multiple times throughout the live action, and each of them keep the audience on the edge of their seat.
The quality of the live action relies on the execution of those scenes… Well, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but that’s just how important they are.
My, my, Moririn. You’re putting a lot of pressure on Himerun, aren’tcha~?
That wasn’t my intention at all, though!?
There is no need to worry. HiMERU will always perform what is expected from him.

Cross Scout Point
Translator’s Note: Cross Scouts were officially introduced as “Mixing the great traits of both sides”. The following information is not officially announced anywhere, but I’d like to point out interesting notes about this cross scout!
Involved Characters
The 4* and 3* characters of this cross scout are all younger brothers in their family. The older brothers for three of them are also part of the cast, and for Keito, his older brother has been mentioned a fair amount across stories.
On the other hand, the two 5*, HiMERU and Chiaki, grew up as an only child. HiMERU was not aware he had a younger half-brother until much later in his teens (as shown in Obbligato). However, what’s interesting to note is that both Chiaki and HiMERU found a great sense of purpose the moment they had someone younger than them to take care of, like a “big brother”.
In the case of Chiaki, this purpose began to bud in his 2nd year of high school, when he picked up Subaru as his very first junior. Chiaki never had any seniors dote on him when he was a first year, so he swore to himself he’d pour all his love on his juniors when he had his own. And then in his 3rd year, Chiaki scouts three inexperienced first years into his unit and spends the majority of his year polishing their skills with great enthusiasm and pride as a senior.
In the case of HiMERU, it began to bud when he was around 17-18 years old and discovered that he had a younger half-brother, Kaname. This made a new form of love bud inside him, and now knowing he’s a big brother to someone, HiMERU then wanted to do whatever it takes to make Kaname’s idol dream come true.
Once an only child, Chiaki and HiMERU suddenly gain a chance to have their own “little brother” (juniors in Chiaki’s case), and begin to dedicate a huge portion of their life looking after them.
This is all my own personal interpretation, but I feel that this is possibly one of the reasons why Chiaki and HiMERU were chosen to be a cross scout!
Surface Level VS Deeper Level
Both HiMERU and Chiaki’s personalities have a surface level and deeper level that “contradict” one another. Chiaki is energetic and overly-caring, but he’s also very level-headed and analytical when the situation calls for it. HiMERU is calm and calculated, but he’s also very emotional and impulsive when it comes to his close family (Kaname). This is explicitly discussed in the story itself, especially in Chapter 8!
Aesthetic Swap

Depending on the Cross Scout, some have an aesthetic swap. Ambivalence is one of them! The key points are in the expressions and atmosphere of the card; HiMERU took on Chiaki’s upstanding, bright atmosphere, and Chiaki took on HiMERU’s calm, enticing atmosphere.
Translation Notes
HiMERU and Chiaki play the main protagonists of the story “The Sub-Zero Mystery”. HiMERU has the role of the private detective (tantei, 探偵), whereas Chiaki has the role of the police officer/police detective (keiji, 刑事). The Cross Scout story is written in such a way to make readers think this could possibly be real (even the synopsis refers back to the live action’s story), up until the reveal in Chapter 4.
Chiaki’s role speaks the exact same way he does, but the personalities differ. As Keito mentions in Chapter 4, the police officer appears zealous and hot-blooded on first glance, but his darker side comes out eventually in the story.
HiMERU’s role speaks in polite language (keigo) just like HiMERU, but his lines barely use any sort of first-person pronoun. In the rare occasions he uses one, it’s ore (俺, masculine “I”). This pronoun is typically used by ore-meru (the actual person behind the HiMERU persona). The lack of first-person pronoun usage throughout HiMERU’s performance is unfortunately difficult to retain in English. This is unlike Japanese, where pronouns are implied even if not explicitly written in the text, hence why the story managed to avoid making HiMERU’s role use pronouns.
Instead, as reference, I’ve added asterisks (*) on all the lines by HiMERU’s role that contained ore. The most important thing to note is that HiMERU’s role did not use the ore pronoun out loud until after Chiaki’s role talked about his past in Chapter 3.

- ↑ If HiMERU starts talking in first-person pronoun “I” in his head, it’s because in the Japanese script, he stops using the polite speech that the HiMERU persona typically uses. Instead, he speaks more informally.

- ↑ Up until this point, HiMERU has been speaking in his HiMERU persona, consisting of polite speech (keigo). In these dialogues, he starts talking more informally like how ore-meru would, and then uses the first-person pronoun ore (俺) on this particular line.
- ↑ Despite appearances, Chiaki is a calculating person, and typically analyzes situations before barging into them. There’s plenty other stories that have shown this side of him, such as Submarine, Stella Maris, Red Hot Island, etc. I recommend the last one most as it shows his overly passionate side just as much as his logical side, just like this story (and it’s short too!).
